Your name in Hebrew

Any name can be written in Hebrew letters: you write it as it sounds, right to left. Here are the commonest English names, written the way an Israeli would write them, with the voice and the reason for every letter.

How a name is written in Hebrew

  • You write the sound, not the spelling: Michael becomes מייקל, the way English says it.
  • The vowels a and e are often left out; o and u are written with ו, i and ee with י.
  • Sounds Hebrew lacks take an apostrophe: ג׳ for the j of James, צ׳ for the ch of Charlie.
  • Some letters change shape at the end of a word: מ becomes ם, נ becomes ן.
