Hebrew grammar, first steps: 10 free units

These ten units are the grammar of your first months of modern Hebrew: the personal pronouns, the gender and plural of nouns, adjectives that follow the noun, «and» as a single letter, ב and ל for places, and the words for time. And the verbs: the present of strong and pi’el verbs, the infinitive, and the past.

Each unit opens with a short explanation, a table and examples with full vowel points, then six exercises: choose the right form, build the sentence from tiles, type the word, match the pairs. Each unit’s page shows the explanation and the first two exercises; the other four open with a free account.

You can start anywhere, but the pronouns come first for a reason: they choose the form of every verb after them. Shoresh is the site of Daniel, a native Israeli who teaches modern Hebrew online in English, Italian and Russian; the first trial lesson is free.

Questions

Where should I start with Hebrew grammar?
With the pronouns and the present tense: with אֲנִי, אַתָּה, הִיא and four forms per verb you can already say whole sentences. Plurals, adjectives and the past come next.
Are the examples written with vowels?
Yes, every Hebrew word has its vowel points (niqqud), so you can read it even if you have only just learned the alphabet. For the alphabet itself there is the free reading course.
Is this modern or biblical Hebrew grammar?
Modern, the Hebrew spoken in Israel today. Biblical Hebrew shares the alphabet and much of the grammar, but its verb tenses work differently.
