Free course · Step 13 of 15
Two words together
Two words are read exactly like one word twice: right to left, the first word first. The space between them is the only new thing. In this step you read the greetings and the first questions: בֹּקֶר טוֹב, good morning; לַיְלָה טוֹב, good night; תּוֹדָה רַבָּה, thank you very much; מִי זֶה?, who is this?; מָה זֶה?, what is this?
Two rules appear here for the first time. In Hebrew the describing word comes after the thing: יֶלֶד טוֹב is boy good, a good boy. And it agrees: a girl is יַלְדָּה טוֹבָה, with the ָה on both words. Watch טוֹבָה: the Vet has no dot, so to-va, not to-ba.
The exercises ask how the pair is read and what it means, with the voice on every tile.

Questions
- Why does the adjective come after the noun?
- It is the normal Hebrew order: «a good book» is סֵפֶר טוֹב, book good. The adjective follows the noun and takes its gender and number.
- How do you say thank you in Hebrew?
- תּוֹדָה, to-da. «Thank you very much» is תּוֹדָה רַבָּה, to-da ra-ba, literally «much thanks». You read both in this step.
- What is the difference between מִי and מָה?
- מִי, mi, is «who», for people; מָה, ma, is «what», for things. מִי זֶה? is «who is this?», מָה זֶה? is «what is this?».
