Free course · Step 5 of 15

The last five: צ ק ר ש ת

With these five letters the alphabet is complete. Tsadi says ts, as in «pizza», and at the end of a word becomes ץ: the last of the five final forms. Qof is a k, like Kaf with the dot, with a leg going below the line. Resh is an r: a Dalet with a rounded corner. Shin has a dot that decides the sound: on the right it is sh, on the left it is s. Tav is a t, like Tet.

The exercises in this step also revise the pairs that look alike: Resh and Dalet, Tav and Chet, Qof and final Kaf. By the end you can name all 22 letters and the five finals, and hear them with the voice.

Step 6 sets the similar letters side by side; from step 7 come the vowels, and with the vowels the first real words.

Step 5 of 15 · Explanation

The last five: צ ק ר ש ת

(Shin) is the letter with three arms.

A dot on the right arm () makes it sh; a dot on the left arm () makes it s, and then it is called Sin.

Most of the time it is sh.

Questions

How do I tell Resh from Dalet?
Dalet has a squared top-right corner, with the roof sticking out; Resh has a rounded corner, one single curve.
Are Shin and Sin two letters?
One letter with two sounds. The dot at the top right (שׁ) says sh, the dot at the top left (שׂ) says s. Without dots, in everyday texts, it is almost always sh.
After the letters, what do I need to read?
The vowels, the marks under and inside the letters: steps 7, 8 and 9. Then short words, long words, sentences and whole lines, up to step 15.
