Free course · Step 2 of 15

Four more: ו ז ח ט

After the first five, four more letters: Vav, Zayin, Chet and Tet. Vav is a straight line and as a letter says v; later, with a dot, it will become the vowels o and u. Zayin also stands on a single line, but has a roof that sticks out on both sides. Chet is an h from the throat, like the Spanish j, and is written like He without the gap. Tet is a t: a bowl with a curl inside.

Two pairs cause confusion: Vav and Zayin, He and Chet. The exercises in this step put them side by side until the difference is automatic. As in step 1: recognise, find, match, say the sound, with the voice on every tile.

By the end you know nine letters, almost half the alphabet.

Step 2 of 15 · Explanation

Four more: ו ז ח ט

(Vav) is a straight line.

As a letter it says v.

In part 2 you will see it turn into the vowels o and u when it carries a dot.

For now: a line is Vav.

Questions

What is the difference between He and Chet?
He has a gap between the roof and the left leg and sounds like a light h; Chet is closed and sounds from the throat, like the j in «jamón».
Is Vav a letter or a vowel?
Both. As a letter it says v. With a dot above (וֹ) it is the vowel o, with a dot inside (וּ) the vowel u. You will see this in step 8.
Do Tet and Tav sound the same?
Yes, both t. Tet is the bowl with the curl; Tav comes in step 5 and has a foot on the left. Which one a word uses, you learn with the word.
