Free course · Step 15 of 15
Reading whole lines
The last step is stamina: a few lines of real text, one after another, each read right to left without stopping at every letter. Read each line slowly once, then again at normal speed. Everything in them you have already met.
The lines tell a small story: שָׁלוֹם, אֲנִי לוֹמֶדֶת עִבְרִית, hello, I am learning Hebrew; I have a big family; my dad loves ice cream; in the morning I drink coffee. The verbs are in the feminine, as a woman says them; a man would say לוֹמֵד, גָּר, שׁוֹתֶה.
Only one thing is new: הַ at the start of a word is «the». הַיּוֹם is «the day», today; הַמּוֹרֶה is «the teacher». At the end of this step you can read Hebrew with vowels. The next step is speaking it.

Questions
- After the course, can I read Hebrew?
- Yes, Hebrew with vowels, the Hebrew of learners’ books. Reading without vowels, as in newspapers, needs you to know the words: it comes with vocabulary, one lesson after another.
- How do you say «the» in Hebrew?
- With הַ joined to the start of the word: יוֹם, day; הַיּוֹם, the day, today. It is the same for masculine, feminine and plural.
- And after the reading course?
- Speaking. A free trial lesson on Google Meet finds where to start; with the app, the exercises follow your mistakes from each lesson.
