Free course · Step 6 of 15
The letters that look alike
You know all 22 letters and the five final forms. What slows a beginner down is not the letters themselves but the pairs that look alike: Bet and Kaf, Dalet and Resh, He and Chet, Vav and Zayin, final Nun and Vav, final Mem and Samekh, Tet and Mem, Ayin and Tsadi. This step puts each pair side by side and names the one detail that tells them apart: a squared or rounded corner, the gap in the leg, the roof that sticks out.
The exercises show the two letters together and ask which is which, until you no longer have to think. It is the step that makes the difference between recognising a lone letter and reading it inside a word at normal speed.
After this step the letters are done. From the next one come the vowels, and with the vowels you really read.
Step 6 of 15 · Explanation
Letters that look alike
You now know all 22 letters and the five final shapes.
What slows a beginner down is not the letters themselves but the pairs that look alike.
This unit puts each pair next to each other and names the one detail that tells them apart.
Questions
- Which pairs are confused most?
- Dalet and Resh, He and Chet, Bet and Kaf. The first two by the top corner; the last by whether the roof sticks out. Ten minutes of exercises make the difference automatic.
- Should I revise the letters first?
- No: the exercises revise them by themselves. If one pair stays hard, go back to the step where those letters were presented: the roof, the corner or the gap are explained there.
- What about Hebrew cursive?
- The course teaches print, the letters of books, signs and screens. The cursive Israelis write by hand has different shapes and comes later, with a teacher.
