Hebrew pronouns: אֲנִי, אַתָּה, אַתְּ, הוּא, הִיא

Hebrew has ten personal pronouns, and they mark masculine and feminine even where English does not. «You» is אַתָּה to a man and אַתְּ to a woman; plural «you» is אַתֶּם to men or a mixed group and אַתֶּן to women only; «they» is הֵם or הֵן. Only אֲנִי «I» and אֲנַחְנוּ «we» are the same for everyone.

This matters more than it seems: the pronoun chooses the form of the verb after it. אַתְּ לוֹמֶדֶת, «you study», said to a woman; אַתֶּם לוֹמְדִים, «you study», said to a group; הֵן לוֹמְדוֹת, «they study», women only. That is why grammar starts here.

This page has the explanation, with a table of all ten pronouns, and the first two exercises: pick the right pronoun in front of the verb. The other four exercises in the unit, including building a sentence and typing the pronoun yourself, open with a free account.

Questions

How do you say «you» in Hebrew?
אַתָּה (ata) to a man, אַתְּ (at) to a woman. In the plural: אַתֶּם (atem) to men or a mixed group, אַתֶּן (aten) to women only.
What is the difference between הֵם and הֵן?
Both mean «they». הֵם (hem) is for men or a mixed group, הֵן (hen) for women only. One man in the group is enough for הֵם.
Can you drop the pronoun in Hebrew?
Not in the present: the verb has only four forms and does not say who, so the pronoun is needed. In the past and future, with I, you and we, it is often dropped, because the ending already says who.
