Throat letters at the end: שׁוֹמֵעַ, יוֹדֵעַ, קוֹרֵא
When the last root letter is ע or ח, the masculine present slips a small a in before it: שׁוֹמֵעַ «hears», יוֹדֵעַ «knows», לוֹקֵחַ «takes». You say shomea, yodea, lokeach: ע and ח, the throat letters, like the a sound and pull it in.
The feminine changes the tune: a, a instead of e, e, so שׁוֹמַעַת, יוֹדַעַת, לוֹקַחַת. With א at the end, the letter stays silent and the feminine is ־ֵאת: קוֹרֵא, קוֹרֵאת «reads»; מוֹצֵא, מוֹצֵאת «finds». The plural is regular for all of them: שׁוֹמְעִים, יוֹדְעוֹת, קוֹרְאִים.

- How do you say «I know» in Hebrew?
- אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ (yodea) if a man says it, אֲנִי יוֹדַעַת (yoda’at) if a woman does. «I don’t know» is אֲנִי לֹא יוֹדֵעַ, or לֹא יוֹדַעַת.
- Why does שׁוֹמֵעַ have that mark under the ע?
- It is a small a, read before the ע: sho-me-a. It is called a furtive patach, and it appears under ע and ח at the end of a word.
- How do you say «I read» in Hebrew?
- אֲנִי קוֹרֵא (kore) for a man, אֲנִי קוֹרֵאת (koret) for a woman. The א at the end is silent, and the feminine just adds ת.
