Free grammar · Unit 17 of 20
The infinitive of two-letter verbs: לָגוּר, לָקוּם, לָרוּץ
Some verbs show only two letters in the present: גָּר «lives», קָם «gets up», רָץ «runs», בָּא «comes». A vowel letter, ו or י, hides between them, and the infinitive brings it back: לָגוּר, לָקוּם, לָרוּץ. Lagur, lakum, laruts.
The tune never changes: la, the first letter, u, the last letter. The opening is la for the whole group, and nothing bends it, unlike the li of strong verbs. A few verbs keep their own vowel: שָׁר and שָׂם have a י inside, so לָשִׁיר «to sing» and לָשִׂים «to put»; בָּא has o, לָבוֹא «to come».

- How do you say «to come» in Hebrew?
- לָבוֹא (lavo). Its present is בָּא, a two-letter verb, so the infinitive starts with la; here o takes the place of u.
- What is the difference between לִלְמֹד and לָגוּר?
- They are two groups. Strong verbs have li and o: לִלְמֹד, לִכְתֹּב. Two-letter verbs have la and u: לָגוּר, לָקוּם. The present tells you which: לוֹמֵד or גָּר.
- How do you say «to rest» in Hebrew?
- לָנוּחַ (lanuach). Its present is נָח, two letters: la, then u in the middle, and the ח at the end takes a small a.
